Ph.D. Project Proposal

چکیده

In this document I will lay out a possible PhD project in Automated Reasoning, discussing the principle objectives, some implementation ideas, and alternative lines of research if unexpected obstacles arise. The aim is that this plan will be sufficiently detailed to serve as proof of concept for the project. The overall project goal is to make it easier to prove theorems of mathematics using an LCF theorem-prover. This will be most useful for formalising mathematics and improving mathematical assistants (such as computer algebra systems), but the tools and concepts developed for this purpose are also likely to be useful for general theoremproving, especially in situations akin to mathematics where the goals are short and the proofs are difficult. The document is structured as follows: section 2 contains a discussion of the overall goal, resulting in a set of requirements that must be met in any solution, in section 3 I examine in detail the first phase of the project and describe my ideas and progress so far, and in section 4 I consider the possibilities after the first phase is over. For the background to this project and a report of my work over the past year, please refer to the companion document to this one; my Ph.D. First Year Report.

Computing Query Answers with Consistent Support A Ph.D. project proposal

This paper describes a Ph.D. project addressing the problem of computing query answers from an inconsistent database. Given a database instance, a set of integrity constraints, and a query, we say that an atom is an answer with consistent support if the atom is an answer on some consistent subset of the data. This notion of an answer is based on a “credulous” query semantics. It avoids answers ...
